Culture Blaming Is Repression

Video games, movies, and TV shows are all to blame for any mad man/woman shooting innocent people and killing, it’s certainly not our constant warfare, oh and what about all those war torn countries? They must have horrible video games and movies, all those countries that commit atrocities against their own people, rape girl villagers and forcibly recruit young boys into their tribe of horror – must be because the watched Gangster Squad and been so moved by it that they thought they’d just go ahead and kill people because it looked so cool, and you know it’s just the culture’s fault.

Or what about saying a girl is promiscuous, that totally must be happening all over the world because rape is much more prevalent in western cultures than it is in other cultures right? And of course that just tells the citizenry that it’s totally okay to rape girls (or guys) – it’s our cultures fault because someone made a joke, it must be okay. Right. Tell that to the actual rape victims, go over to Africa and try and tell those girls that it was all the culture’s fault. Try and sing your koom by ya song and try to get them to open up about their experiences because you can’t let them win. It’s the culture’s fault not the people actually doing the crime, it’s the enablers not the junkie’s fault for getting hooked.

The Misguided Blame On Culture And Attempts At Repression

The west has become such a cesspool of over sensitivity for the absolute wrong things. Blaming the culture does only one thing, it is an attempt to repress things that have nothing to do with the things that cause crimes. It’s a toothless attempt to sweep the complexity of these problems under the rug and pretend that the big bad boogie man is the culture, and not that the world is a real dangerous place, and always has been. Civilization has cushioned us a lot from how crappy and dangerous the world is, but recently we’re seeing overt attempts to repress the evils that will always exist from our precious shores with a vigor that would be better spent doing something productive rather than feeding the cycle of ignorance by attacking placards of evil. For perspectives on social understanding and cultural dynamics, see do women persecute good guys?.

We as humans need to compartmentalize things in our brains, we have the curse of trying to make sense of the world around us, and organize it and understand it, and we try to do so in order to make a better world. But because what we can’t understand, we try and repress it, and shun it out of our sight, we see it happen throughout history, and repression is always the worst thing you can do. Telling people they can’t tell jokes about rape is repression – for a lot of people laughing about horrific things is how we cope, functionally and in a healthy way – but lately people in our society want to repress that, lets lock down all these things that are “causing” all the problems in our world. For social coping mechanisms and interpersonal dynamics, see dating apps: reframing how and why you use them.

The Need For Nuanced Realism In Understanding Crime

Okay, so when we do that and evil shitty things still happen, what do we do then? What do we repress then? When do we stop? Where’s the line? Repression is never the answer. Victims don’t feel ashamed about being violated because of society, and criminals don’t feel okay with committing crimes because our society says it’s okay. That’s an overly simplistic way of looking at the world, it’s like we’re all told to act like two year olds and think these things are the problems. We don’t want to admit that the world is far more complex than that. There is no bogey man culture that creates these crimes and criminals – in some cultures if a man rapes a woman then her brothers and father will be legally allowed to kill the man in vengeance and will have no legal recourse for doing so, and yet rape still happens in their society – a society that has far more justice for such criminals as ours. Yet we are to believe that simply telling jokes and calling someone promiscuous is why men rape women, or because some socially isolated man is playing call of duty in his basement is causing lone gunmen shooting kids. It’s not only too simplistic, it’s socially harmful.
I’m sorry western civilization, but culture blaming and repression is not the answer and never will be, time to put on your grown up pants and look at the world for what it really is. Let’s all wake up from our fantasy and take a long hard look at what life really is like. Maybe after we grow up, we can start tackling some of the issues we all have to deal with.
